5 Stars The LG 42PG20 Plasma has exceeded my expectations!
I have owned several HDTV's both Plasma and LCD. I wanted to stick with a plasma on this purchase because of the superior contrast ratio versus a typical LCD. I went to my local electronics store intent on buying an entry level Samsung. Despite my plan, I soon realized I could not pull the lever on the Samsung. Its picture suffered from severe jagged edges and presented an inferior image quality compared to the TV's surrounding it on the showroom floor. No manner of adjustments could resolve the problem, therefore I moved on to the similarly priced Panasonic and LG. I immediately noticed that the Panasonic had issues with background noise. This was despite the fact that the noise reduction feature was already turned on. The CNET editor review mentions this problem with the Panasonic plasma. Meanwhile I was impressed with the LG's smooth, clear, and lifelike picture. No background noise, and a deep rich color reproduction equal to that of the Panasonic. I decided to do some more research on LG reliablity and performance before making my final decision. As you would expect, it is easy to locate horror stories for any television brand, as of course people with a bad experience are more likely to post their sob story all over the web. The bottom line for myself was that a Consumer Review said that LG has a similar reliability record compared to other major brands, with only 2% or fewer models suffering from defects within their first year. That was sufficient evidence for myself while also taking in to account the 1 year parts & labor warranty (plus 2 years for the panel) provided by LG. I waited for a blowout sale, and then purchased the 42PG20. The first one arrived with a broken screen. Of course Plasma screens are glass unlike LCD's so they are more easily damaged in shipment. I refused shipment and soon thereafter received a replacement which arrived undamaged. Out of the box the LG is one slick & sweet looking plasma. Unlike some people, I prefer the high gloss piano black screen border. Its sleek and more upscale in appearance. I have HDTV running via an HDMI 1.3 cable. The picture is even better than it was in the store. Despite a low 1024x768 resolution, the HD reproduction is detailed and crisp. I was expecting to sacrifice a bit in this area, and am simply ecstatic that the difference between this TV and my previous 1080p is simply insignificant. As you would expect with a plasma, the colors are deep and rich. Unlike many LCD's, sports broadcasts suffer no ghosting or pixelation. SD broadcasts look great as well, with certain channels looking better after switching to cinema mode or one of the other customized picture settings. I have the LG TV ORBITER feature set to the ON position. A nice feature available to prevent image retention or burn in which can be an issue with plasma televisions. So far, this has not been an issue. I will mention a couple of minor negatives. This LG does suffer from severe glare if operated in a brightly lit room. As is the case with many plasmas, the glass screen reflects the bright windows in my living room. Thus, it will do better in a dark room or positioned with windows behind rather than in front of the TV. Also, this plasma runs HOT. It actually raises the temperature in my living room if run for a few hours. If I put my hand over the set, I can feel the heat rising from it. From what I've read, this is common with plasma TV's in general. Overall, I am VERY happy with the LG 42PG20. A great Plasma television, providing a fantastic HD picture while outperforming many of the other brands in this price range.

5 Stars Great Plasma and Better Than Expected
After the price dropped on this T.V. I decided to buy.

Wary of plasmas I still loved the high contrast ratio that this one delivered. I had the choice between this and a similar samsung and definately could see that this Lg model gave the better picture. 720p? they could have fooled me because the crispness of picture quality is terrific, one thing I was wary of with this being a 42" model.

The Darks are dark, the whites are white, and the colors are vibrant.

I keep mine set on cinema style settings and love it.

The sound is better than most flat panels and the speakers are hidden.

I like the high gloss finish, makes it look sleek.

Ghosting is minimal on this model and if you do experience some ghosting they supply different ISM methods to basically prevent or actually one called white wash which basically resets your picture. I play a lot of Xbox 360 so I was worried about the ghosting but it is not really a problem. I recently paired this with LG's LHT854 home theatre system (about $220) and am enjoying a high quality home theatre setup for a decent price.

So everyone considering picking up this T.V. I say Enjoy!

5 Stars What A Picture!!!
We have a 42-inch Panasonic plasma TV that we bought about 7 years ago for $4,000. My how times have changed! The new TH-42PZ85U from Panasonic is currently selling for about ? the price we paid and is a vastly better television.

For starters, the outward appearance is elegant. It features a very slim cross-section and smooth, seductive lines. The screen has an anti-reflective filter which cuts way down on glare and, you guessed it, reflections. This, coupled with the TV's high contrast ratio of 1 million to 1, gives you a very sharp, realistic picture. On top of that, this TV can handle a 1080p signal, producing the highest quality image currently available. This is ideal for Blu-Ray viewing. Content providers such as DirecTV are promising 1080p programming "real soon now."

A little more of the specs, then I'll talk about the good stuff. On the back of the TV, there are more ports and plugs than you'll know what to do with. If you're considering this TV, then you probably have a high-definition source such as an HD cable or satellite box and maybe Blu-Ray. Most modern HD devices can use an HDMI cable, which can carry the HD video signal along with the Dolby 5.1 audio information. This TV has 3 HDMI ports which make for a very uncluttered back plane.

Okay. So we ordered one of these for my in-laws to replace a gigantic tube television they had. That one weighed 180 pounds. This one weighs 70 pounds. When it arrived, it took about 20 minutes for us to unbox it and screw in the base plate. We took our time. 10 minutes later, it was upright, plugged in, and showing us that we had made the right choice. The picture is gorgeous! With DirecTV as the source, on any of the HD channels, you really can't help but stop and stare. That effect is magnified when you watch a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. It's almost unsettling! Watching HD versions of the old Star Trek episodes, for example, shows you things Mr. Spock never wanted you to see! Make-up lines, costume glitches, etc. that were invisible in the 1960s are now stunningly obvious. But I digress.

There are plenty of settings available but we changed very few. I'm sure a videophile would be in there tweaking everything, but were very happy with the image. Skin tones, blacks, saturation, were all to our liking once we told the unit it was not in demo mode (the mode used to attract people in a store. Usually, it is oversaturated.) We've watched movies, football games, and even video sent over from the PC. It is all wonderful.

As I said at the top of this review, we've had a Panasonic 42-inch plasma TV for about 7 years, as well as a 52-inch for about 5 years, and both are still in great condition. No dead pixels, no color fading, no problems at all. That gives me hope that this new entry will fare at least as well.

4 Stars Very good TV
This TV has great color and action reproduction. I definitely prefer plasma over LCD for both of those reasons and Panasaonic does it as well as anybody in my opinion. My main concern has to do with the frame. It is wider than I would prefer which makes the outer dimension wider than it needs to be. The frame is also shiny so I get more reflection from the frame than I get from the screen, which is usually the concern about plasma TVs. Both of these are minor compared to the stellar picture quality.

5 Stars Great TV.
looked at alot of reviews, haved had panni for about a month. just change settings, awesome picture. Underworld was incredible, using stanard DVD's with inexpensive upconvert player. no motion blur. very happy with purchase, shipping was fast no problem with shipping. TV was double box. great price but price has dropped even a little more since purchase.

1 Star Great TV, horrible delivery
let me say, this TV is great. picture, etc are all fantastic.

I will never buy anything from amazon again that requires shipping via freight. To put it mildly, the shipping was a nightmare. I was stood up on 3 occasions by CEVA. Their only accommodation was to offer for me to drive to their warehouse to pick up the tv. When they finally did "deliver" the tv, they brought it to the wrong address. I spent about 14 hours total waiting for this delivery at home, and then they delivered it to my work address. Totally unacceptable. Even worse, and very disappointing, was Amazons response. I contacted them regarding my experience and they sent me a form email back without a real apology, Certainly not what I expected. I understand mistakes happen, and most people have had good experiences so far, but its very alarming that amazons response to their shippers mistake was basically "too bad".

5 Stars jim
I did alot of research on tvs before buying this panasonic and so far am very happy with it. The picture is terriffic as others have said the sound system could be better, but not a reason to not buy this product. As of now i believe I have received a great product at a great price!!!!

5 Stars CALL Manufacturer's regarding EXACTLY HOW their warranty "WORKS" BEORE you buy!!
I have had ours Panasonic 50" Plasmasince July of this year 2008), I have a bunch of kids & was leary of the track record of some of these other manufacturers I was considering, in regards to warranty assistance SHOULD the need arrive!

I tried (I repaeat TRIED!!) to contact several manufacturer's that were in the running for my consideration, in regards to their warranties, WHO, WHERE HOW...etc would I send/take my humongous plasma to?

I am VERY rural (in the hills of TN!) MOST of them required I SHIP it to them!Do you know how big those boxes are that they come in? & the logistics of repacking it.........NOPE! "It aint a-happenin'!"

NO WAY do I have the room to store that big box, which would be needed to send it to them (& the cost!! Bad-WOW!)

Anyhow.... after MUCH deliberation & research I went with Panasonic (as their warranty is INTO YOUR HOME REPAIR SERVICE should you need a repair, GOOD-WOW!! :-)

I bought this as an older model with GREAT comsumer reviews,& a good value as the newer models continue to roll out & the price continues to fall!

I have been EXTREMELY pleased, & nothing has happened so far to need any warranty work!

The TV is crisp & clear, plays beautifully!

I don't think anyone would be unhappy with any Panasonic TV, I haven't seen a bad one yet......& NO, I don't have any stock (or work for panasonic!!) LOL.....just a bunch of kids & needed a dependable, quality TV....

In hindsight........the ONLY thing is, now that we've had it awhile,,,it actually looks SMALL to us!

We all want a BIGGER one! At least with all the research I've already done on Manufacturer's & their warranties (some are absolutely WORTHLESS!)

I only will have to look for the best deal on the bigger screens!

Hope this helps, 'cuz what good is a great deal on a TV IF you can't get it fixed should you need to!

5 Stars We're pleased with our purchase.
We bought our Panasonic Viera 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV after reading the reviews here, and we haven't been disappointed. The picture is great, and it was quite simple to set-up. We combined our purchase with a Yamaha RX-V463 receiver, Bose 301's (that we had previously) and a Bose CVS-10 center speaker, and it's been very rewarding. We advise that the reader take the time to do their homework and get the best deal that's available. And yes, the prices on these items DO drop; the price of our HDTV went down only a week after we ordered it.

4 Stars Defective upon arrival, but great now
We own a 42" version of this TV which we love, and decided to add a 50" downstairs. The TV arrived with a defect -- a two-inch vertical line on the left side of the screen which never went away. Everything else was working ok. After many attempts to get through to Panasonic customer support, they arranged in-home service for the TV. The technician replaced one board and it now works perfectly. We love it now. The technician commented that he purchased the 720P version of this TV because Panasonics have fewer problems than the other brands they work on, including Samsung.

5 Stars Great set for the money
Should I buy online or from a store? I had all the fears of stepping out on the edge. I have never ordered from amazon and have heard all the debates on lcd vs plasma. I did the online and instore research for a month. My wife finally said just buy the dang thing so I went for it and man was I ever satisfied. From start to finish I had first class service and as for the Plasma let me tell you I am amazed at the quality. the HD is fantastic and the bluray is out of this world. This is a great plasma. This set in the stores was any were from 200.00 to 600.00 more and I would have had to go get it. Amazon brought not only to my door but also brought it in and and turned it on for a test run. I looked at buying a more expensive set ya know you get what you pay for but I myself read alot of customer reviews on this plasma and took the chance. I tell you take the money you save on this set and buy a bluray, HD receiver, Bluray discs, and a new Plasma hutch. you won't be sorry.

5 Stars I love this TV
Panasonic TH-50PZ80U TV

Overall, I love this TV. It is fantastic. A few comments:

1. The speakers are great, as far as TV speakers go. Anyone who complains about them are just surround-sound speaker snobs. That's like complaining that your Ferrari won't float in the lake. That's what your boat is for, dummy. Let's compare apples to apples. A TV is not a surround sound system.

2. Most movies are not 16:9 ratio, as all widescreen TVs are. They are 1.33:1, which means you will still have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, just like you did with your old tube TV. But the bars are much thinner, at least.

3. Regular analog cable TV looks okay, not great, not bad. I think when you get a TV of this size, since there are limitations on the quality of regular cable, a 50" TV will magnify them, simply because it's so big. However, regular DVDs look fantastic. So if you are getting a digital signal, you shouldn't have any problems.

4. I've had no issues as far as burn-in goes. I've had a movie paused for 20 minutes with no ghosting. I've also had the black bars on the top and bottom for 3 hours watching a movie, and light gray bars on the sides watching regular TV for hours, as well, with no problems. It also has a manual burn-in prevention selection, where you can run a white vertical bar slowly across a black screen as a prevention measure. I do that every once a while on my own, just to give myself a warm and fuzzy feeling. When you watch programs made for the old 4:3 tube TV ratio, it shows light gray bars on the sides of the screen. You can change these to black, but the TV likes them to be light gray to help prevent burn in, although it will default to black bars on the top and bottom when playing a DVD.

5. Reflection, the other concern about Plasmas besides burn-in, is no big deal. It's glass on the front of the TV, so it won't reflect any more than your old TV, or the family portrait on the wall. You might have to turn off a lamp, or close the drapes to remove some glare, but even if you didn't, it's not a deal breaker. LCDs don't have glare problems, but then you have to deal with some blurriness on fast movement, so Plasma seems a better choice to me, especially since burn-in seems non-existent.

6. The box says to keep the TV upright, and the manual said that some internal circuitry could be messed up if it was set on it's side, and I've heard from other people that you need to have the TV upright for 24 hours before you turn it on, but after doing research, the true concern is the huge, expensive piece of glass on the front of your TV. Remember when you see glass trucks rolling down the street, and all the glass is vertical on the side of the truck? That's because it's stronger on it's edge, and being horizontal in the back of a bouncing truck could crack it. I think that the TV is firm enough to keep the glass from cracking or the internal circuitry messing up if you drove slowly and cautiously. Besides, you kind of have to put it on it's side just to get it out of the huge box. I drove it in my van on it's side for 30 miles (that's how the store put it in there), and have had no problems.

7. The box was so big, I initially thought that the TV might be too big for my living room. No such thing. The bigger, the better.

8. The black setting was set to off, which keep the blacks from being as black as they could be. I switched it to on, which made everything a little darker, but I like it better. It's not the brightness setting, as this option was "off" or "on". I think this is a default setting they had for display purposes, to try to make the TV seem brighter for display.

9. One last minor issue, there isn't a separate button for closed captioning on the remote control. I know most people never use closed captioning, but sometimes I can't understand what someone says, and I want to quickly read what they are saying, then turn it back off.

Overall, this is a fantastic TV. I am extremely happy with it.

As an aside, don't pay a ton for an HDMI cable. "Category 2" is as high quality as hdmi.org recognizes, and RadioShack sells them for $40. I have found that Mediabridge cables online for $4 are just as good, as well.
